Pre-Nursing Major? What is that?!

"I AM A NURSING MAJOR . Why does my profile say pre-nursing?!" This was the first question I asked myself when I entered college. Before I asked myself this question, I was a senior in high school, who was excited that I got an an early admissions into my dream school, and that I was going to start practicing to become a registered nurse. I thought, "Alright, I am about to enter college, take summer classes, and graduate in three years. This finna be a breezeeee!" A couple weeks later I attended a nursing informational meeting at my college. A peculiar, stiff, and serious-minded man stood at the podium for one hour discussing all the rigorous and crazy requirements to JUST apply for nursing school. I stood there dumbfounded, shocked, and half sleepy, wondering what that heck I got myself into. Then, just as things began to kick up, nothing got better. People began asking questions such as, "What is the ideal score for the TEAS exam? Do I need 100 volunteer hours to apply for the program? and "What is the required science GPA for this nursing program?" While others are asking these educated questions, I am over there asking myself what the heck is a TEAS exam, what is a science GPA, I thought there was only one GPA, and why are people asking these random questions?! Needless to say, I left that information meeting confused and overwhelmed.

After leaving that informational meeting, I started to look up TEAS exam dates, and call all types of facilities where I could get a quick 100 hours of volunteer work. What I did not know then was that you have to take several prerequisite classes, take your TEAS exam, accumulate volunteer hours, get two recommendations, and write an essay in order to apply for the nursing program at my college. *whew* In addition to that, I will probably need two years (or four semesters) to finish my prerequisites before applying. At this point, I understood what a pre-nursing major was, and my fantasy goal of graduating college in three years was flushed down the drain. Yeah, I. Was. Surprised.

So what is pre-nursing. Pre-nursing is a major before getting accepted into nursing school. As a pre-nursing major, you will take prerequisites, or pre-nursing classes before applying to actual nursing school. These classes are your sciences and electives. Depending on the college, most institutions have requirements that must be fulfilled before applying to their nursing program. I know there is a lot of information to take in, especially if you are just finding out what a pre-nursing major is. But do not worry! I have plenty of articles on my blog that will guide your questions!
