Do I Need Experience Before Nursing School?

WITH all the information that you learn as a pre-nursing major, it seems as if getting prior healthcare experience is required before applying for nursing school. If you have read one my my articles,"Pre-Nursing Major: How Do I Prepare for Nursing School", then you are probably know some ways you can keep yourself busy as a pre-nursing major while also getting experience for nursing school.

SO, the question is, do you need experience before nursing school. The answer is yes and no. No, because once you are in nursing school, you will learn all of the required curriculum you will need to become a competent registered nurse. Many people get into nursing school without having any healthcare experience. It is quite common actually. On the other hand, it can be a yes, because some nursing schools may require some kind of certification such as a Certified Nurse Assistant license (CNA) before applying for their program. However, some nursing schools may not require experience, but having prior experience in a hospital or clinical setting can strengthen your application. Altogether, it all depends. Just make sure you check what the requirements are for the nursing schools you are applying for. Personally, I did not have any healthcare experience, besides the yearly checkups I get, *haha* and I am doing quite fine in nursing school right now.

IF you have ever thought of getting experience before nursing school, try to look at different jobs and certifications you can get to acquire some type of patient-care experience. However, do not stress if you never had experience before. Nursing school is set up to teach you all of the basics, so you are not missing out!
