HESI A2 EXAM: What Is It?

WHILE some nursing schools may require the TEAS exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills), other nursing schools may require a different exam called the HESI Admission Assessment (or HESI A2) which stands for Health Education System Incorporated. Personally, I never taken the HESI A2 exam. I only taken the TEAS exam (and only once. Thank goodness!), but for my readers, I decided to do my research and see what the HESI A2 exam is all about. In this article, I will be discussing what is the HESI A2 exam and what subjects it contains.

What is the HESI A2 exam?

The HESI A2 is a series of exams that are taken before you get into nursing school. Unlike the TEAS exam, on the HESI A2, you are allowed to choose which subjects you want to take. Of course, each nursing school will require certain subjects you have to take to get into their program, but you are free to choose the subjects that you will succeed in the most.

What subjects are on the HESI A2 exam?

  1. Math: The math section contains 50 questions taken in 50 minutes. Question types range from addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, fractions, proportions, dosage calculations, and other simple math concepts.

  2. Reading Comprehension: The reading section contains 47 questions taken in an hour. This section contains passages to read from and answer questions about.

  3. Vocabulary: This section contains 50 questions taken in 50 minutes. Vocabulary can range from basic words to health care related words.

  4. Grammar: This section contains 50 questions taken in 50 minutes. It consists of basic grammar, speech and grammatical errors

  5. Chemistry: This section contains contains 25 questions taken in 25 minutes. It tests over the periodic table, chemical equations, chemical bonding, and other basic chemistry concepts.

  6. Anatomy and Physiology: This section contains 25 questions in 25 minutes. This section tests over the basic human anatomy, the physiology of the body systems, and other basic concepts.

  7. Biology: This section contains 25 questions in 25 minutes. It tests over cells, cellular respiration, and basic biological concepts.

  8. Physics: This section contains 25 questions in 25 minutes. It tests over energy, acceleration, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and other physics basics.

The HESI A2 exam also has a Learning Styles Test and Personality Test that identifies your learning style, and personality style that relates to how you learn.
