DON'T CHANGE YOUR MAJOR!

"I just couldn't get good grades in pre-nursing, so I changed my major."

"I know I want to be a nurse, but this is too hard."

"I am sure there is an easy way out. This is too much."

ALL of these are only a few of dozens of sayings I have heard from other people while I was completing my prerequisites. When I was a pre-nursing major, it was not easy tackling those hard science classes. At one point, I thought about changing my major because I heard that nursing school was a dungeon, full of fire-breathing dragons, and I was just a pawn that would not survive at all. Fortunately, I did not let that stop me from continuing on. I knew that I wanted to be a nurse, and I knew that I would be unhappy if I were to changed to anything else. So why give up? Unfortunately, this was not the same case for my peers and associates. If I were to give a ratio of people who actually started as pre-nursing major, and got into nursing school, I would say 2:10. Meaning, out of ten people who started together, only 2 got into nursing school. What happen to the other 8? Did they find out that nursing was not there passion, or did they changed their major?

You may have thought about changing your major, or you probably already did. But the catch is that you know you want to be a nurse, but you probably did not perform well in some classes, or you probably don't have the best test scores, or the time and process it takes to apply for nursing school is just too much for you. My best advice to you? .DON'T CHANGE YOUR MAJOR! "But why Happiness?" Let me break it down in 5 tips:

1. RETAKE THAT CLASS: Don't feel ashamed to retake a course. If anything, you are learning from a mistake that could of haunted you later on in your college career. Do a summer course or, take a break and wait until the regular semester. Either way, do what you can to improve your grades.

2. TIME MEANS NOTHING: Quit worrying about graduating late or taking too much time in school. Who cares? It is YOUR journey and YOUR time. As long as you are consistently in school and working hard, do what you can to get where you need to go in order to be a nurse, not just an early graduate.

3. IT'S YOUR PASSION: At this moment, close your eyes and imagine yourself doing any other career that might make you happy. If you cannot picture anything at all, then do not give up. Clearly, this field is your only interest. So why do something else that does not interest you?

4. STUDY AND SAVE: Retake that entrance exam. Apply to that school again. Apply to another school. Do something to better your chances. Go ahead. It's for the best of you. Also, make sure you save enough money for fees and exams just in case for rainy days during you pre-nursing journey.

5. FIND A MENTOR: Try finding a mentor who is a nursing student, a nurse, or anyone who know is in the healthcare field. Sometimes looking up to someone in your field of interest can help to motivate you when you are down. It helps to reinforce that you want to pursue this pathway, and that not everybody's journey is the same.
